This is one of the most comprehensive and authoritative etymological dictionaries of Modern Greek to date, the work of a brilliant linguist, professor N. P. Andriotis. As the author notes in the introduction, the book “is intended mainly for teachers responsible for our language education”. He considers it his duty “to assist them in raising awareness about the history of the vocabulary of Standard Modern Greek”. However, the dictionary is also intended for anyone interested in studying Modern Greek more thoroughly or wishing to acquaint themselves with issues of etymology and get to know the historical derivation of at least the standard vocabulary of Modern Greek. The dictionary provides the etymology of approximately 25.000 words of Modern Greek. The distinguished linguist, professor N. P. Andriotis served as a member of the Institute’s Board of Directors for many years.
