Description
This two-volume publication is the second one in a series of publications of the Institute of Modern Greek Studies entitled “Greek Language: Synchrony and Diachrony”, covering the following areas: (a) etymology of the Greek language; (b) language contact; and (c) the koine/standard language and relevant issues. This work includes 27 papers, most of which were presented at the 1st International Conference on Language Contact in the Balkans and Asia Minor, organised by the Institute at the Teloglion Fine Arts Foundation (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, November 3–5, 2016). The aim of this conference was to examine language contact in the Balkans and Asia Minor, with a focus on the relationship between Greek and other languages in these areas. This work is the first one on Greek language contact designed and implemented in Greece in an attempt to provide a comprehensive overview of Greek language contacts in the main areas in which they occurred (the Balkans and Asia Minor) and to put forth a new perspective.
